London first, then a slow climb into Scotland

Easy start in London, practical through England, then colder, greyer and a lot more scenic once we hit Scotland.

  • United Kingdom
  • 7–22 Nov 2023
  • Autumn route
  • City + road trip
  • Mostly places

It’s mostly buildings, roads, food and little breaks. What stuck with me was the feel of the places, not one big event.

Moody road through the Scottish Highlands under low clouds
Gets better the further north you go: city first, then cold roads, stone, whisky rooms and winter lights.

Basically, the trip gets moodier as it goes.

London was the easy start: park water, theatre lights, easy meals. It really got going once it turned cold and the scenery took over.

Route

London to Edinburgh, with a moody northern middle.

Easy start in London, then Windsor, Manchester and Blackpool. It opens up in Scotland: Glasgow, the Highlands, whisky stops, Edinburgh, then one last run back south.

Vibe

Autumn streets, warm plates, grey skies.

Not a checklist trip. More small moments: a quiet London lake, casual food stops, rainy Highland roads, whisky rooms, old stone, and winter lights that made the cold days feel less heavy.

London

Easing in

Park water, abbey stone, theatre lights and comfort food before heading north.

England stops

Castles, meals, and small detours

Windsor was the fancy old bit. Manchester and Blackpool were the useful middle: casual plates, sweets, errands and some quiet road miles.

Scotland

The road got moodier

Autumn paths, grey Highland roads, stormy views, whisky rooms, stone monuments. Easily the moodiest part of the trip.

Edinburgh

Old stone and winter lights

Castle gates, palace stone, old rooms, then back to London for the brighter winter lights.

Original Itinerary

What the original plan looked like

7–9 Nov / London opening

Easy first days

London started slow, which was the right call. Full days, but never rushed in a bad way.

  • Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Borough Market, Tate Modern, and St Paul’s.
  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child split across the day, then Duck & Waffle late.
  • London Eye, Westminster Abbey, St James’s Park, Hyde Park, Harrods, and King’s Cross.
10–12 Nov / Windsor to Blackpool

Castles, road miles, and the in‑between bit

The practical bit between the fancy south and the moodier north. Still a lot of charm.

  • Windsor Castle and Stonehenge before the long drive into Manchester.
  • Liverpool day with Albert Dock, Museum of Liverpool, cathedral stops, and casual city food.
  • Manchester center, John Rylands Library, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, then the push up to Glasgow.
13–18 Nov / Glasgow to Inverness

Where it got moody

Scotland had the most personality: colder light, wider views, much bigger days.

  • Glasgow museums, galleries, and a calmer city than I expected.
  • Loch Lomond, Glen Etive, Three Sisters Point, Glenfinnan, Eilean Donan, Quiraing, Kilt Rock, and The Storr.
  • Fort Augustus, Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness, Inverness, The Glenlivet, and Stirling Castle.
19–22 Nov / Edinburgh and return

Old stone, winter lights, then back south

The last days got full again, but the good kind of full, not rushed.

  • Arthur’s Seat, Holyroodhouse, Calton Hill, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and The Dome.
  • Royal Yacht Britannia, Dean Village, the Modern Art gallery, and a few last dinner and bar stops.
  • Return through Bicester Village, Hyde Park Christmas lights, one last London meal, then departure.
