Kindling Jakarta

Kindling made a birthday dinner feel intimate instead of overly polished.

9.1/10

Want fine dining in Jakarta that’s more homey than theatrical? Kindling is a strong pick for a special occasion. My birthday dinner here stood out: warm room, personal service, and a set menu with real ceremony, not cold precision.

Expensive, but worth it. The whole night was memorable, from moving through three rooms to the head chef coming to greet us at the end.

The crab custard was my clear favourite. Delicate, comforting, the dish I’ll remember this birthday by.

Kindling doesn’t do the cold fine-dining thing. It’s intimate, a bit jadul in a good way, and confident enough to let the dinner take its time.

My birthday dinner in Jakarta. It worked because it felt thoughtful, not flashy. We moved through three rooms: one for appetizers, one for mains, one for dessert. Small thing, but it made the dinner feel like a real occasion.

The menu calls itself a quiet dialogue between Chinese roots, French refinement, and the terroir of Indonesia. For me the best bits were the comforting, deep, special-feeling ones, not the purely new stuff.

How the birthday dinner went

Short answer: worth the splurge for a birthday. Intimate room, personal service, and a menu strong enough that the one weaker course didn’t change my verdict.

Less like a formal dining room, more like someone walking you through a very thoughtful birthday evening.

Why it worked

Quick Verdict

Warm, nostalgic, easy to recommend for a special occasion

Not your typical polished fine dining room. It’s cosy, a little jadul, full of character. That’s what made it stand out for me, especially for a birthday.

The three rooms helped a lot. Appetizers, then mains, then dessert, each somewhere new. It kept a pace without getting stiff. There was time to enjoy it, which matters when the meal is the occasion.

The only course that didn’t quite work for me was the firefly squid. A bit too fishy for my taste. Everything else was strong, and I still left very satisfied.

Worth it? Yes. Go for a birthday, anniversary or date night when you want an experience, not just a table. Not where I’d go for a quick casual meal, but for a planned special night, yes.

Disclosure: I paid for this meal in full. Nothing here was hosted, comped, or discounted.

Room Mood

Cosy, intimate, a bit nostalgic. Made the whole dinner feel personal.

Top Picks

Crab custard, steak, then duck. These are why I’d book again.

Service Read

Great pacing, hospitable waiters, and a birthday hello from the head chef. We felt really looked after.

Course Flow

The dishes that made the night

Small bites, seafood, duck, steak, dessert. My favourites were the ones that mixed comfort with a bit of ceremony. They made it feel personal, not just technical.

Kindling small bites served on white plates and a black table
From the early bites you could tell they weren’t going to rush this.
Firefly squid course with white asparagus and foam
The firefly squid looked beautiful, but it was the only dish that was a little too fishy for me.
Duck course with orange sauce and a small tart
The duck: one of the richer, more satisfying plates in the middle of the meal.
Steak course with sauce, greens, and a crisp bite
The steak was my second favourite after the crab custard, and the best main of the night.

The room and the ending

Changing rooms made it feel like more of an occasion

At Kindling the setting has as much personality as the food. The room makes you slow down and enjoy the evening. That’s exactly what I want from a birthday dinner.
