A cozy fine dining birthday at Kindling.

Kindling was my birthday dinner pick this year: intimate, nostalgic in a good way, and memorable because the night moved through three different rooms for appetizers, mains, and dessert.

Personal Review

Warm, jadul, and quietly special

Kindling does not feel like a typical polished fine dining room. It feels cozy, a little jadul, and full of character, but in the best way. The experience had a nice sense of ceremony because we moved through three rooms: one for the small bites, one for the main courses, and one for dessert.

The set menu was described as a quiet dialogue between Chinese roots, French refinement, and the terroir of Indonesia. My favorite dish was the crab custard, which felt delicate, comforting, and deeply savory. The steak came next, followed by the duck, both rich and well executed.

The only course that did not fully land for me was the firefly squid, which tasted a bit too fishy for my preference. But overall, the dinner felt expensive in a worthwhile way, especially when the head chef personally greeted us and wished me happy birthday.

Worth it? Yes, for a special occasion. I would recommend Kindling for a birthday, anniversary, or date night when you want dinner to feel like an experience, not just a meal.
