Auckland at both ends, North Island stops in between
Started and ended around Auckland. The good stuff was in between: Rotorua and Taupo, New Plymouth, then Matamata and Hamilton.
New Zealand / 19–28 Jul 2024
Winter road trip: steam, cloudy lakes, one great Taranaki stretch, and an easy finish in Matamata.
Short version of a winter road trip. The good stops, not the timetable.
No single big highlight. More like weather, road stops, and the landscape slowly changing.
Here’s how it went.
Rotorua and Taupo first: steam and grey lake weather. New Plymouth is where I got my best photos. Matamata and Hamilton to finish: green hills and round doors.

The stops
Or go in order: steam and lake weather first, clear Taranaki views in the middle, green hills at the end.
01 / Rotorua and Taupo
Steaming ground, wet lake views, grey skies. That's how the loop started.
Start Rotorua & Taupo
02 / New Plymouth
Best-looking stop: mountain views, calm water, sunsets, and shiny mirror-like city stuff.
Start New Plymouth
03 / Matamata and Hamilton
An easy finish after the cold, grey driving days.
Start Matamata & HamiltonJust the stops. No transport, hotels, costs or schedule.
I have a few meal photos, but not enough names, taste notes or verdicts to write proper food posts.
Rotorua and Taupo for steam and clouds, New Plymouth for the best views, Matamata for a gentle ending.
