Back to New Zealand trip

New Zealand / Matamata and Hamilton / 24–25 Jul 2024

A storybook ending in Matamata

Last stop, and the easiest one. Green slopes and little round doors after days of lake weather and winter roads.

  • Easy last stop
Green Hobbiton hillside with a winding path in Matamata
So much green. Brighter and more fun than the rest of the trip.

An easy last stop.

The photos kind of say it all. Not the most dramatic stop, but a nice light finish. A bit touristy, a bit charming, and easy to enjoy once I stopped being so serious about it.

Matamata, in moments

Jump to a part.

Yes, it’s touristy. Still easy to enjoy.

Matamata

The hillside cottages speak for themselves.

Green hills, soft paths, little details tucked into the slopes. After several cold, grey stops, all this green felt like the trip switching moods one last time.

Details

The round doors made my day.

The doors are the charm. Touristy, sure, but the good kind. You get why everyone still wants a photo.

Personal take

Easy ending for a short winter loop.

Why it works

Matamata and Hamilton work as the last stop because it’s slower here. Ending on something warm and simple makes the whole trip land better.

Best for

If you do a similar route, treat this as a chill last day, not a big sightseeing one.
